About This Recruitment

Tripura University’s Department of Chemical and Polymer Engineering is recruiting a Project Fellow for a UGC-DAE CSR (Indore Centre) funded project developing Perylene diimide (PDI)-based non-fullerene acceptors for stable, efficient organic solar cells. This research falls within the fast-growing field of organic photovoltaics, an area of renewable energy research aimed at developing lighter, more flexible and potentially lower-cost alternatives to conventional silicon-based solar cells, under the supervision of Dr. Sachin Bhaladhare, Principal Investigator.

Why Organic Solar Cell Research Matters

Organic solar cells using non-fullerene acceptors like Perylene diimide represent a significant shift in photovoltaic materials research, offering potential advantages in flexibility, lightweight form factor, and lower manufacturing costs compared to traditional silicon-based solar panels, even though efficiency and long-term stability remain active areas of ongoing research. This UGC-DAE CSR funded project addresses the stability challenge directly, aiming to develop bulk heterojunction organic solar cells that maintain efficiency over time – a critical requirement for organic photovoltaics to become commercially viable at scale, making this a research area with genuine relevance to India’s renewable energy goals.

Understanding the Two Qualification Routes

Candidates should note that this position accepts two distinct educational backgrounds – either a first-class M.E./M.Tech in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering or Chemical Science, or alternatively an M.Sc. with 55% marks in Chemistry, Chemical Science, Physics or Materials Science. Both routes require the degree to have been completed not earlier than 3 years prior to application, meaning this position specifically targets relatively recent postgraduates rather than candidates with long-completed degrees, likely to ensure fellows bring current, up-to-date subject knowledge to the project.

What This Fellowship Offers Beyond the Stipend

While the Rs. 14,000/- plus HRA monthly fellowship is modest compared to JRF-level positions requiring GATE or NET qualification, this Project Fellow role offers meaningful hands-on research experience in a specialized, technologically relevant area of materials science at a Central University, with the possibility of extension up to three years based on performance and fund availability. For candidates early in their research careers looking to build a foundation in organic electronics, polymer science or renewable energy materials research, this position offers direct laboratory experience that can support future PhD applications or research career transitions, particularly for candidates from Northeast India seeking research opportunities closer to home.

Preparing a Strong Application

Since the application process is a straightforward CV submission by email rather than a lengthy formal application form, candidates should ensure their CV clearly and completely covers all the specifically requested details – academic qualifications starting from 10th Standard, a clear summary of any relevant experience, and complete contact information – since incomplete CVs may be more likely to be overlooked given the compressed timeline between the application deadline and expected interview scheduling. Candidates with any prior coursework or project experience touching on organic photovoltaics, polymer synthesis, or materials characterization techniques should highlight this specifically, since it directly aligns with the project’s core research focus.

About Tripura University

Tripura University, converted into a Central University in 2007, serves as a key higher education and research institution for Northeast India, with its Department of Chemical and Polymer Engineering actively pursuing externally-funded research in materials science and renewable energy technologies. The University’s location in Agartala, Tripura, positions it as an important research hub for the region, and this UGC-DAE CSR-funded project reflects the growing capacity of Northeast Indian universities to compete for and secure national-level competitive research grants in cutting-edge materials science fields.

Understanding UGC-DAE CSR Funding

The UGC-DAE Consortium for Scientific Research is a specialized funding and collaborative research body that connects university researchers with the advanced scientific infrastructure and expertise available at Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) institutions, enabling university-based researchers to access sophisticated characterization and testing facilities that might not otherwise be available at their home institution. This project, funded through the Indore Centre of UGC-DAE CSR, likely gives the selected Project Fellow access to specialized materials characterization techniques, an added research benefit beyond just the standard laboratory facilities of the host university’s own Chemical and Polymer Engineering department.

Building a Research Career in Materials Science

For M.Sc. Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science graduates, and M.Tech holders in Chemical/Polymer Engineering, this Project Fellow position offers a concrete entry point into experimental materials research with direct application to renewable energy technology, a field expected to see sustained research investment as India pursues its clean energy targets. Candidates successfully completing this fellowship, particularly given its potential 3-year extension, would build a research profile well suited to subsequent PhD applications in materials science, polymer engineering, or renewable energy research, both within India and internationally, given the global relevance of organic photovoltaic research.

Cost of Living and Practical Considerations

Candidates relocating to Agartala for this fellowship should factor in the relatively modest fellowship amount against the generally lower cost of living in Tripura compared to major metropolitan cities, which can make the stipend more practically sustainable than it might first appear. Given the position’s location within the University’s own department, selected fellows can also expect close day-to-day interaction with the Principal Investigator and departmental research infrastructure, rather than a more distant or loosely supervised research arrangement sometimes seen in larger, multi-institutional projects.
