How to Apply

Interested and eligible candidates should apply online through the official NIO vacancy portal before the last date, 16 August 2026. Candidates are advised to keep their educational qualification certificates, mark sheets and experience certificates ready in scanned format before starting the online application process, since project positions of this nature typically require complete supporting documentation to be uploaded along with the application form.

About This Recruitment

This Senior Project Associate position at the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, is tied to a coastal engineering and climate-resilience research project that combines the Central Water Commission’s (CWC) Coastal Morpho-dynamics Information System (CMIS) with multi-source observational data to develop site-specific, climate-resilient shoreline protection plans. Given India’s extensive and increasingly climate-vulnerable coastline, such applied research projects carry significant relevance for coastal infrastructure planning and disaster resilience. Candidates with a background in ocean/marine/coastal engineering, physical oceanography, or civil engineering with relevant experience, particularly those familiar with numerical modelling tools such as DELFT3D, MIKE by DHI, SWAN or TELEMAC, will find this project a valuable opportunity to apply advanced coastal simulation techniques to real-world climate adaptation planning. Since NIO Goa is a premier CSIR marine science laboratory with access to extensive field and laboratory infrastructure, this position also offers meaningful exposure to a leading Indian oceanographic research environment for early- to mid-career researchers in coastal and ocean engineering disciplines.

Tips for Candidates Applying to This Recruitment

  • Since the last date to apply is 16 August 2026, a very short window, eligible candidates should not delay and should begin the online application process immediately upon deciding to apply.
  • Candidates whose highest qualification is a Ph.D. should ensure their post-PhD research experience in a relevant field is clearly documented, since it forms the basis of eligibility under the notified qualification pathway for PhD holders.
  • Candidates with hands-on experience in any of the listed modelling software (ADCIRC, WW3, SWAN, DELFT3D, MIKE by DHI, TELEMAC) should highlight specific projects or datasets they have worked with, as this is explicitly called out as desirable experience.
  • Given that the role involves fieldwork, including sediment and water sample collection along the coast, candidates should be prepared for a role that combines both computational/desk-based analysis and outdoor field data collection.

About National Institute of Oceanography, Goa

The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), headquartered in Goa, is one of the constituent laboratories of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and is India’s premier institution dedicated to oceanographic research, covering physical oceanography, marine biology, marine geology and geophysics, chemical oceanography, and ocean engineering. NIO regularly undertakes sponsored and collaborative research projects with agencies such as the Central Water Commission, the Ministry of Earth Sciences, and various state coastal management authorities, and routinely recruits Project Associates and Senior Project Associates to support its ongoing scientific and applied research programmes. Such project-linked positions form an important talent pipeline for India’s marine science and coastal engineering workforce, offering hands-on research experience under experienced scientists working on nationally significant oceanographic and coastal resilience challenges.

Understanding Shoreline Morpho-Dynamics Research

Shoreline morpho-dynamics refers to the study of how coastlines change shape and structure over time in response to waves, tides, currents, sediment transport and human interventions such as harbour construction or coastal protection structures. Coupled hydro-morphological simulation combines hydrodynamic models, which predict water movement, with sediment transport and morphological models, which predict how the seabed and shoreline evolve, allowing researchers to forecast how a coastline might respond to future storms, sea-level rise or engineering interventions. This project’s use of the Central Water Commission’s Coastal Morpho-dynamics Information System (CMIS), combined with multi-source observational data, situates it within India’s broader effort to build robust, science-based coastal protection strategies as climate change increases the frequency and intensity of coastal erosion events and extreme weather along India’s roughly 7,500-kilometre coastline. The resulting site-specific Climate-Resilient Protection Plans are intended to guide practical, evidence-based decisions on where and how to invest in coastal defences, making this an applied research project with direct relevance to disaster risk reduction and coastal infrastructure planning.

Career Relevance of This Position

For early- and mid-career professionals in ocean, marine, coastal and civil engineering disciplines, a Senior Project Associate role at NIO offers substantive, applied research experience that differs meaningfully from purely academic postings. Candidates get to work with real observational datasets, industry-standard numerical modelling software such as DELFT3D, MIKE by DHI, SWAN and TELEMAC, and contribute to research outputs with direct policy and infrastructure planning relevance. Given that NIO Goa is one of the leading marine science institutions in India under the CSIR umbrella, this position also offers valuable institutional exposure and networking opportunities within India’s oceanographic and coastal engineering research community, which can be beneficial for candidates considering further doctoral research or a long-term career in marine science and coastal engineering.
