Kangra Revenue Department Recruitment 2026: The Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Kangra at Dharamshala has invited applications for re-engaging retired officials against vacant posts of Naib-Tehsildar, Kanungo and Patwari on a remuneration basis, under the establishment of the Deputy Commissioner, Kangra. This recruitment is exclusively for retired revenue department officials, and interested candidates can apply on or before 14 August 2026.

This notice (No. 4255-4316/SKEK dated 05.08.2026) has been issued in pursuance of approval received from the Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue) to the Government of Himachal Pradesh. Unlike a typical fresh recruitment drive, this is specifically a re-engagement scheme aimed at filling temporary gaps in revenue administration using experienced, already-retired officials from the department’s own ranks, rather than hiring new candidates from the open market.

Why “Junior in Age Gets Preference” Is Worth Noting

One clause in this notice runs opposite to what many candidates might instinctively expect — if applications exceed the number of vacancies, preference goes to candidates who are junior in age, not senior. In most re-engagement or extension schemes for retirees, this kind of rule exists to maximise the useful working years the department gets out of each re-engagement before the candidate hits the 65-year ceiling, and to keep a rotating pool of available retirees rather than repeatedly re-engaging the same, oldest cohort first. A retired Patwari who superannuated at 60 will generally be preferred over one who superannuated at 63, purely because the younger retiree has a longer runway left before the 65-year cutoff makes them ineligible for further re-engagement.

It’s also worth understanding why the state is running this scheme at all rather than simply waiting for regular recruitment to fill these posts. Revenue administration in India — land records, mutation entries, revenue case disposal — is highly dependent on continuity and local institutional knowledge, since Patwaris and Kanungos deal with land and property records specific to their assigned areas over long periods. When vacancies open up faster than the regular recruitment pipeline can fill them, backlogs of revenue cases can build up quickly, directly affecting citizens waiting on land mutations, revenue certificates, and related administrative processes. Re-engaging recently retired officials, who already know the local land records and procedures, is a faster way to keep that pipeline moving while regular recruitment through the Himachal Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Board or equivalent process runs its own course — which is also exactly why the notice states services will be terminated the moment a regular official becomes available for that post.
