About This Recruitment
CVRDE, one of DRDO’s key research establishments focused on combat vehicle technology, is conducting a large-scale ITI Apprentice recruitment drive with 93 vacancies across 18 diverse trades – from core engineering trades like Fitter, Turner, Machinist and Electrician to specialized roles like CAD-CAM Operator, Computer Networking Technician and Photographer. This apprenticeship opportunity at a premier defence research establishment offers ITI-qualified candidates valuable hands-on training exposure within DRDO’s technical ecosystem, even though it does not guarantee employment upon completion.
Why This Walk-in Format Demands Immediate Action
Since the walk-in interview is scheduled for just two days – 08 and 09 September 2026 – starting almost immediately after this notice, ITI-qualified candidates across all 18 listed trades must act quickly to ensure their NCVT/SCVT MIS portal registration is complete and all required documents are in order before reporting to the venue. Given that candidates whose exam results were not declared by 30 August 2026 will not be considered, only those with confirmed, declared results from 2023 through 2026 should plan to attend, and provisional certificates should be carried if final certificates are not yet issued.
Understanding the Trade-wise Spread and Stipend Structure
With COPA drawing the highest number of vacancies (13) followed closely by Electrician (12), Draughtsman and Fitter (10 each), candidates in these high-demand trades have the widest opportunity within this recruitment, while niche trades like Sheet Metal Worker, Computer Networking Technician and Computer Hardware Repair Mechanic offer just a single slot each, making them more competitive despite the smaller applicant pools typically associated with specialized trades. The stipend structure, ranging from Rs. 10,560 to Rs. 11,040 per month depending on trade, follows standard Apprentices Act stipend norms and remains consistent regardless of the specific trade’s vacancy count.
What Makes This a Valuable Training Opportunity
Beyond the stipend, an apprenticeship at CVRDE offers exposure to defence-sector engineering practices and quality standards that differ meaningfully from typical private industry apprenticeships, given the establishment’s focus on combat vehicle research and development. While the notice clearly states no employment is guaranteed after training completion, candidates completing their apprenticeship at a DRDO establishment gain a credential and practical experience that can strengthen future applications to both defence-sector and private engineering roles requiring hands-on trade skills.
About CVRDE and Its Role in Combat Vehicle Development
Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (CVRDE), based in Avadi, Chennai, is one of DRDO’s premier research laboratories, responsible for the design, development and testing of India’s indigenous combat vehicles, including tanks and armoured platforms used by the Indian Army. As a facility engaged in advanced engineering and manufacturing research, CVRDE’s ITI apprenticeship program exposes trainees to precision engineering, defence-grade manufacturing standards and specialized equipment handling that differs significantly from typical civilian industrial apprenticeships.
Making the Most of a DRDO Apprenticeship
While the Apprentices Act, 1961 explicitly does not guarantee employment on completion of training, candidates should view this apprenticeship as a genuine skill-building and credentialing opportunity that carries the prestige of a DRDO establishment on their resume. Apprentices completing their training at CVRDE gain hands-on exposure to defence engineering practices, quality control standards and specialized machinery that can meaningfully strengthen future job applications, whether in the broader defence and public sector engineering ecosystem or in private manufacturing and technical industries seeking candidates with rigorous, standards-driven training backgrounds.
Preparing for the Walk-in Day
Given the enormous scale of this recruitment – 93 vacancies across 18 trades likely to draw a very large number of ITI-qualified applicants from across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states – candidates should plan to arrive early on either of the two interview days to avoid long queues and ensure sufficient time for document verification. Since selection is based on ITI qualifying marks followed by the walk-in interview itself, candidates should bring their original mark sheets prominently displaying their percentage or grade, as this will directly factor into the shortlisting process before candidates proceed to the interview stage itself.
Documents That Should Not Be Left at Home
Beyond the core documents listed in the official notice, candidates are well advised to also carry a few extra passport-size photographs, a valid mobile number for any follow-up communication, and photocopies of every original document, since walk-in verification processes at large government establishments often require candidates to submit copies alongside the originals for record-keeping. Arriving without a complete set risks a candidate being turned away or asked to return, which is a significant setback given the interview window spans only these two specific days.
