UPSC’s Advertisement No. 10/2026 is one of those notifications that looks small at first glance — just 34 vacancies — but turns out to be seven completely different jobs bundled into one document, spanning lighthouse engineering, Hindi legal translation, thematic map-making, and horticulture in Ladakh. If you’ve only skimmed the headline vacancy count, you’ve likely missed whether any of these seven posts actually matches your own qualification — so below, we’ve gone through each post individually: who’s eligible, how many seats, which category, and what the job actually involves.

1. Assistant Executive Engineer (Civil) — DGLL

One post, reserved for OBC, based at Noida but liable to serve anywhere along the Indian coast including the Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands. This is a Group-A Gazetted post under the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships — you’d be responsible for the construction, improvement and maintenance of lighthouses and other aids to marine navigation, a genuinely unusual engineering brief compared to typical civil engineering postings.

2. Assistant Executive Engineer (Electronics) — DGLL

The largest single post-type in this notification after Research Officer — 9 seats, spread across four categories, with one of the nine specifically reserved for PwBD candidates within the UR quota. You’d be assisting in the installation, improvement and maintenance of radio equipment and other navigational aids, again based at Noida with all-India coastal liability.

Qualification: Degree in Telecommunications / Electronics Engineering / Electronics and Communications Engineering (or IETE / Institution of Engineers Section A&B enrolled up to 31.05.2013), plus 2 years’ supervisory experience specifically in radio aids to navigation. Two years’ experience in power generation/supply/transmission with small-motor lighting and wiring experience is desirable, though not mandatory.

3. Assistant Director (Engineering) — Ports, Shipping & Waterways

A single UR post, and the youngest age ceiling on this entire list — just 30 years. Based in New Delhi, this Group-B Gazetted role is deeply technical and administrative at once: scrutinising Detailed Project Reports and cost estimates for Major Ports and Fishing Harbour projects, examining tender documents and specifications, and coordinating R&D proposals and committee work under the Development Advisor (Ports).

Detail
Information
Vacancy & Category
1 (UR)
Age Limit
30 years
Essential Qualification
Bachelor’s in Civil or Mechanical Engineering
Experience
2 years in civil/harbour engineering works OR maintenance & operation of cranes, diesel locos, marine engines
Probation
2 years, with mandatory 2-week induction training

4. Superintendent Translation (Hindi Branch) — Ministry of Law & Justice

This is the one post on the list that isn’t engineering or science at all — it’s a legal-linguistics role in the Official Languages Wing of the Legislative Department. One UR post, and the qualification path here is genuinely layered, offering multiple routes to eligibility rather than a single fixed degree requirement.

Path
Requirement
Route A
Master’s in Law + 2 years in one of: State Judicial Service / Govt-PSU legal affairs / legal practice / law teaching / Hindi translation of statutes / statute drafting — PLUS Hindi-medium schooling or Hindi as a subject
Route B
Bachelor’s in Law + 4 years in the same set of experience categories, PLUS the same Hindi-medium condition

In plain terms: if you hold a Master’s in Law, you need 2 years of qualifying experience; with only a Bachelor’s, that bar doubles to 4 years. Either way, you must also show a Hindi-medium educational background or have studied Hindi formally — this isn’t a generic legal post, it’s specifically about drafting and translating statutes into Hindi for the Central Government. Age limit is 35 years for UR, and the role is based in New Delhi.

5. Research Officer — National Atlas & Thematic Mapping Organisation

The single largest vacancy pool in this notification — 11 posts, spread across four categories, based in Kolkata. This is a Group-A Gazetted scientific post focused on cartography and geographic research: producing thematic maps and atlases, analysing remotely sensed satellite data, conducting GPS and field surveys, and training staff in GIS and geospatial tools.

CategoryVacanciesAge Limit
UR7 (incl. 1 PwBD)35 years
EWS135 years
OBC238 years
SC140 years
Total11—

Qualification: Master’s Degree in Geography, Geology, Applied Geology, Geoinformatics, Geographical Information System and Remote Sensing, Geomatics, or Geospatial Technology — with Geography or Geology specifically studied as a subject across all years of your Bachelor’s degree. On top of that, 5 years of experience in geographical/cartographical teaching or research involving data collection and map preparation is required. A Doctorate in any of the listed specialisations counts as a desirable (bonus) qualification, not a mandatory one.

6 & 7. The Two Ladakh Posts — Domicile-Restricted

Posts 6 and 7 stand apart from the rest of this notification in one crucial way: both are reserved exclusively for Scheduled Tribe candidates and, more importantly, both are restricted to domiciles of the Union Territory of Ladakh. If you don’t hold (or qualify for) a Ladakh Resident Certificate under the Ladakh Civil Services Decentralization and Recruitment rules, neither of these two posts is open to you, regardless of your ST status elsewhere in India.

PostVacanciesPay LevelQualification
6. Horticulture Development Officer4 (ST)Level-08BSc Horticulture or BSc Agriculture Science
7. Soil Conservation Assistant7 (ST)Level-08BSc Agriculture/Horticulture, BSc/MSc Soil Science, or BE/BTech Agricultural Engineering

Both carry a 40-year age limit for ST candidates and a 2-year probation with mandatory induction training. The Horticulture Development Officer role involves implementing horticulture development programmes, promoting new farming technologies, and monitoring pest/disease control across departmental orchards and nurseries. The Soil Conservation Assistant role sits within the Command Area Development wing of the Agriculture Department, preparing detailed project reports and cost estimates for soil conservation works and supervising their execution on the ground.

Ladakh-specific rule: Domicile eligibility for both Ladakh posts runs through two categories — Category A (holding, or eligible for, a Ladakh Resident Certificate) and Category B (children of L.R.C. holders). Reservation itself follows the Jammu & Kashmir Reservation Act, 2004 as extended to Ladakh, and candidates eligible for more than one reserved category must pick just one at the time of application — that choice is final.

PwBD Reservation — How It Works Across These Posts

Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (40% or more) get a 10-year age relaxation across every post in this notification, and two of the seven posts — Assistant Executive Engineer (Electronics) and Research Officer — carry an actual reserved PwBD seat within their UR quota (1 seat each). The other five posts are marked “suitable” for certain PwBD categories but carry no dedicated reservation, meaning a PwBD candidate can still apply and benefit from the age relaxation, just without a ring-fenced seat. Suitability varies quite specifically by disability type and post — for instance, Hearing Impaired candidates are marked suitable for the Civil AEE post but Blind/Low Vision candidates are not, while the reverse is roughly true for the Research Officer post. If you have a benchmark disability, it’s worth checking the specific suitability table in the official notification for your exact condition against your post of interest before applying.

Application Fee & Age Relaxation

Category
Fee
SC / ST / PwBD / All Women (any category)
Nil (fully exempt)
UR / OBC / EWS (Male)
₹25

This is a genuinely small fee compared to most Central Government exams — a flat ₹25 for the applicants who owe anything at all — but the rule is strict: an application submitted without the fee, where applicable, is rejected outright and no representation against that rejection is entertained. The fee is also non-refundable and can’t be carried forward to any other UPSC exam or selection.

Questions Candidates Are Asking

Can I apply for more than one post in this notification?

The notification treats each post/vacancy as a separate specific module within the application portal, so you would need to complete a separate post-specific application for each vacancy you’re eligible for and wish to apply to.

I’m ST but not from Ladakh — can I apply for posts 6 or 7?

No. Both Ladakh posts require domicile status under the Ladakh Civil Services Decentralization and Recruitment rules, in addition to ST status. Being ST alone, without the Ladakh domicile certificate, does not make you eligible for these two posts.

Is there a written exam for these posts?

The notification describes this as recruitment by selection, which for UPSC typically means shortlisting based on qualifications and experience followed by an interview, rather than a written competitive exam — shortlisted candidates will be intimated separately about the interview date.

What happens if I submit incomplete or incorrect information?

UPSC has stated plainly that wrong information can lead to rejection through computer-based shortlisting, in addition to possible debarment from future UPSC processes — so double-check every field before submission.

Do women candidates pay the application fee?

No. Women candidates of any category are fully exempt from the ₹25 fee, along with SC, ST, and PwBD candidates. Only UR, OBC, and EWS male candidates are required to pay.

Is the Research Officer post open to candidates without a Geography/Geology background?

No — the qualification is specific: a Master’s in Geography, Geology, Applied Geology, Geoinformatics, GIS & Remote Sensing, Geomatics, or Geospatial Technology, and Geography or Geology must have been studied as a subject in every year of your Bachelor’s degree, not just at the postgraduate level.

Details on this page are drawn from UPSC’s official Advertisement No. 10/2026 dated 07.08.2026. Vacancy numbers, reservation positions, and PwBD suitability details are as published by the Commission and may be revised — always cross-check against the official notification before applying.
