About This Recruitment
TISS, established in 1936 and rated a Grade I University in NAAC’s 2024 assessment, is filling one Assistant Professor post in Sociology at its Guwahati Off Campus, which offers B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. programmes with a strong focus on humanistic and interdisciplinary approaches to the Social Sciences. This contract-basis appointment reflects TISS’s continued expansion of academic capacity at its Guwahati campus, one of its four campuses alongside Mumbai, Tuljapur and Hyderabad.
Why Northeast India Research Experience Is Especially Valued
Since the Guwahati campus is uniquely positioned to study the social, political and cultural dynamics of Northeast India and its transnational neighbourhood, TISS has specifically listed research experience on this region as a desirable qualification for this post. Candidates with prior fieldwork, publications or research engagement focused on Northeast India, its border communities, ethnic diversity, or cross-border social dynamics with neighbouring countries will likely find their profile particularly well-matched to this Centre’s academic priorities.
What Makes This a Genuine Academic Opportunity Despite Being Contractual
Although this is a contract appointment rather than a permanent faculty position, the pay scale (Academic Level 10, Rs. 57,700/- entry pay under the 7th CPC) matches what a regular Assistant Professor would draw, and the role includes a genuine opportunity to teach, supervise students and engage in research at a nationally reputed Deemed University. Since the contract is extendable based on performance and institutional need, candidates who perform well in this role may find it a meaningful stepping stone toward more permanent academic positions at TISS or elsewhere.
Understanding the Two Routes to Eligibility
Candidates should note that this recruitment offers two distinct paths to meeting the essential qualification – either an Indian Master’s degree in Sociology combined with NET/SLET/SET or an exempting PhD, or a PhD earned from a foreign university ranked among the global top 500 by QS, THE or ARWU. This second route is particularly relevant for candidates who completed doctoral studies abroad and may not hold an Indian NET qualification, giving TISS access to a wider, internationally trained applicant pool for this Sociology position.
What the Selection Process Actually Involves
Since shortlisted candidates are called for both a presentation and an interview rather than a written test, candidates should prepare a clear, well-structured presentation on their research background, teaching philosophy and how their expertise aligns with the Centre for Undergraduate Studies’ focus areas, particularly Northeast India studies where relevant. Given that TISS explicitly states meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview call, candidates with genuinely distinguishing research contributions or teaching experience should make sure their application clearly highlights these strengths rather than simply listing bare eligibility.
