About the SIB Fellowship Programme

The School of Diagnostic Innovation in Biodesign (SiB) has been established at THSTI by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, in collaboration with leading institutions including the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IITM), Christian Medical College-Vellore, PGI-Chandigarh, and Venture Centre-Pune. The programme’s focus is on medtech innovations for developing affordable and accessible medical diagnostic technologies, and has been a highly successful DBT flagship programme, having led to the development of more than 35 medtech products and 20 startups to date.

Why SIB Fellows Gain Uniquely Broad Exposure

Fellows selected for this programme will be exposed to all aspects of diagnostic development – from validation and commercialization to actual clinical use – through training in clinical immersion, product innovation, and entrepreneurship, offered in collaboration with premier institutions across multiple cities. Given the multidisciplinary eligibility, spanning Science, Engineering, Medicine, Design, and Business backgrounds, this fellowship is designed to build cross-functional teams of innovators rather than recruiting from a single academic discipline.

Understanding the National “Aatma Nirbhar Bharat” Objective

The programme explicitly aims to enable India to attain its goal of self-reliance (“Aatma Nirbhar Bharat”) in the diagnostics domain, meaning selected Fellows are expected to eventually provide niche skills that reduce India’s dependence on imported diagnostic technologies. Candidates motivated by translating research into real-world, socially impactful medical products, rather than pursuing a purely academic research career, are likely to find this fellowship particularly well-aligned with their interests.

Why the Statement of Purpose Carries Significant Weight

Since the notice explicitly states that screening is based on both eligibility criteria and the content of the Statement of Purpose uploaded with the application, candidates should invest real thought into articulating their specific interest in diagnostic innovation, any prior exposure to entrepreneurship or design thinking, and how their particular academic or professional background (whether in Science, Engineering, Medicine, Design, or Business) equips them to contribute to a multidisciplinary Biodesign team, rather than treating this as a routine formality.

THSTI’s Broader Research Ecosystem

Beyond the SiB fellowship, THSTI has built an extensive research infrastructure spanning centres for Maternal and Child Health, Virus Research, Tuberculosis Research, Microbial Research, Immunobiology and Immunotherapy, Drug Discovery, and Bio-design and Diagnostics, supported by facilities like a Biosafety Level-3 Lab and a Vaccine Design and Development Facility. Selected SiB Fellows will be working within this broader ecosystem at the NCR Biotech Science Cluster, Faridabad, gaining exposure to one of India’s most concentrated hubs of translational health research.

Long-Term Career Value of the SiB Fellowship

Given that the SiB programme has already contributed to more than 35 medtech products and 20 startups since its inception, Fellows joining this cohort become part of a track record of tangible innovation outcomes, which can meaningfully strengthen future career prospects whether in the medtech startup ecosystem, established diagnostics companies, or further academic research in biomedical engineering and translational health sciences.

Final Word

Eligible candidates from Science, Engineering, Medicine, Design, or Business backgrounds interested in the SIB (Biodesign) Fellow position should apply online at the THSTI website with all required documents and the applicable fee, on or before 23 September 2026.

Preparing Your Application Given the Multidisciplinary Eligibility

Since eligibility extends across five distinct academic backgrounds, Science, Engineering, Medicine, Design, and Business, candidates should clearly connect their specific qualification pathway to the fellowship’s diagnostic innovation focus in their application, rather than assuming their eligibility alone is sufficient. For instance, an MBA applicant should articulate how their Life Science or Engineering background supports a role in diagnostic product development, while a Design graduate should highlight relevant coursework or projects connecting product design to healthcare or medical device applications.
