OPSC Veterinary Assistant Surgeon Recruitment 2026: Apply Online for 436 Posts
Looking for a government job this year? A new recruitment notification has been released by the Odisha Public Service Commission. This recruitment offers 436 vacancies for the post of Veterinary Assistant Surgeon. Candidates from the SEBC, SC and ST categories of Odisha can apply. Before filling the application form, check the eligibility, salary, age limit and selection process explained below.
This is a large backlog recruitment drive meant to fill long-pending posts under the Odisha Veterinary Service. If you hold a veterinary science degree and belong to one of these reserved categories, this is a great chance to secure a Group-A government job with a respectable pay scale.
OPSC Veterinary Assistant Surgeon Recruitment 2026 – Highlights
This table gives you a quick summary of the whole recruitment. OPSC has released this drive specifically to fill backlog vacancies that remained unfilled in earlier recruitment cycles under the Odisha Veterinary Service.
Out of the 436 posts, 62 posts are reserved for SEBC candidates, 141 for SC candidates and 233 for ST candidates. Within this total, 18 posts are set aside for Persons with Disabilities and 4 posts are reserved for Sports Persons belonging to these categories.
Who Can Apply
This recruitment is open only for candidates belonging to the SEBC (Non-Creamy Layer), SC and ST categories of Odisha. Candidates from unreserved categories or other states are not eligible for this particular backlog drive.
You must also be able to read, write and speak Odia, proven through an accepted qualification such as passing Middle School with Odia as a subject. Government employees can apply too, but they must inform their Head of Office and arrange a No Objection Certificate well in advance.
Educational Qualification
The qualification requirement for this post is specific to the veterinary field.
- You must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc. & A.H.) or an equivalent degree from a recognised university, college or institution in India or abroad.
- If your degree is from a foreign university, you need a conversion certificate recognised by the Veterinary Council of India.
- You must hold a valid Registration Certificate under the Odisha Veterinary Practitioners Act, 1970, and this registration must be completed before the last date of application.
If your degree certificate shows only grade marks instead of a percentage, you must also submit a conversion certificate from your university clearly showing the equivalent percentage and the formula used. Without this, your application can be rejected.
Age Limit
Your age should be between 21 and 47 years as on 1 January 2026. This means you should be born between 2 January 1979 and 1 January 2005, since this recruitment is meant only for SEBC, SC and ST candidates.
There is an extra relaxation for Persons with Disabilities belonging to these categories. If your permanent disability is 40% or more, you get a 10-year relaxation above the standard 47-year limit. No other type of age relaxation is allowed in this recruitment.
Application Fee
The application fee structure for this recruitment depends on your category.
- Candidates other than SC, ST and PwD must pay Rs. 700 online.
- SC, ST and PwD candidates are completely exempt from paying any fee.
The good news is that the fee paid by other candidates is refunded, but only to those who actually appear for the written examination. If you pay the fee but skip the exam, your fee will not be refunded. Make sure your bank details are entered correctly in the form, since refunds are processed to your original payment method.
Salary
Selected candidates will get a starting basic pay of Rs. 56,100 per month. This falls under Level-12, Cell-1 of the Pay Matrix, as per the Odisha Revised Scale of Pay Rules, 2017.
Along with this basic pay, you will also receive dearness allowance and other allowances as decided by the Odisha Government from time to time. Being a Group-A post, this job brings strong career growth, respect and long-term stability in government service.
Selection Process
Unlike many other government recruitments, this selection process has only one stage.
- Written Examination: This objective type test carries 800 marks in total, divided into two papers of 400 marks each. Paper-I covers Veterinary Science, and Paper-II covers Animal Science. Each paper has 200 questions, and you get two and a half hours for each paper.
There is no interview round for this post. Your final merit position depends entirely on the marks you score in the written examination. The number of candidates called for document verification will be twice the number of vacancies in most categories, so scoring well matters a lot here.
Documents Required
Keep these documents ready and upload scanned copies during the online application process.
- HSC or equivalent certificate as proof of your date of birth
- B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree certificate from a recognised institution
- Mark sheets of all examinations from HSC to your degree, including any fail marks
- Conversion certificate from the Veterinary Council of India, if you hold a foreign degree
- Permanent Registration Certificate under the Odisha Veterinary Practitioners Act, 1970
- Four recent passport size photographs
- Caste certificate by birth showing SEBC, SC or ST status
- Odia language test pass certificate, if applicable
- Permanent Disability Certificate, for PwD candidates claiming reservation
- Sports Certificate from the Director of Sports, Odisha, for Sports Person quota
- A valid photo identity proof such as Aadhaar, PAN or Driving Licence
Make sure your caste certificate and disability certificate are genuine and issued by the correct competent authority, since fake or expired documents can lead to rejection or even disqualification from future OPSC exams.
Important Dates
Do not wait until the last date to submit your form. The application system does not allow much editing after final submission, so it is safer to review everything carefully and apply a few days early.

Why You Should Apply
This recruitment gives SEBC, SC and ST candidates with a veterinary background a genuine chance to secure a respected Group-A government post. With 436 posts on offer, this is one of the larger recruitment drives in this field in recent times.
The pay scale, job security and career prospects that come with a Group-A veterinary post make this an attractive long-term choice for any veterinary science graduate from these categories.
Preparation Tips
- Focus on core Veterinary Science topics for Paper-I, since this carries 400 marks.
- Study Animal Science topics thoroughly for Paper-II, as it carries equal weightage.
- Practice objective type questions regularly, since both papers follow an MCQ format.
- Revise general awareness topics too, as the exam includes a general awareness component along with subject-specific questions.
- Keep your registration under the Odisha Veterinary Practitioners Act completed early, since it is a mandatory requirement.
- Manage your time well during the exam, since each paper has 200 questions to attempt in two and a half hours.
A well-planned study routine covering both Veterinary Science and Animal Science equally will help you handle this 800-mark exam with confidence. Since there is no interview stage, your written exam performance alone decides your selection.
