About This Recruitment

Northern Coalfields Limited, which produced 140.50 MT of coal during FY 2025-26, is engaging 73 interns under Round 3 of the national Prime Minister Internship Scheme, offering Diploma and Degree holders in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemistry, Commerce, Pharmacy and Civil disciplines a structured 9-month training exposure at one of India’s leading coal-producing PSUs. While this internship does not lead to regular employment, it offers valuable hands-on exposure to mining operations, laboratory work, and administrative functions at scale.

Why Foreman Trades Have the Most Vacancies

Foreman (Electrical) and Foreman (Mechanical) trades together account for 33 of the 73 total vacancies, the largest share among all six disciplines, reflecting NCL’s substantial ongoing need for technically trained personnel across its electrical and mechanical maintenance operations. Diploma holders in these two engineering disciplines are especially well-placed for this PMIS round, given the comparatively higher number of unfulfilled seats relative to Lab Technician, Clerk, Pharmacist and Overseer trades.

Understanding the Prime Minister Internship Scheme

The Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) is a national skill development initiative connecting fresh Degree and Diploma holders with hands-on internship opportunities at major public and private sector organizations across India, giving young candidates exposure to real workplace environments early in their careers. NCL’s Round 3 engagement of 73 interns under this scheme reflects the company’s participation in this larger national effort, offering structured 9-month placements across core technical and administrative functions within one of Coal India Limited’s major subsidiaries.

What Candidates Should Prepare Before Applying

Since applications are accepted exclusively through the centralized PMIS portal and require an Aadhaar-linked bank account for stipend disbursement, candidates should confirm their Aadhaar-bank linkage status well before attempting registration, as this is a mandatory prerequisite rather than something that can be arranged after applying. Candidates should also keep their Degree/Diploma mark sheets and qualifying certificates ready for the aggregate percentage calculation used in merit list preparation, since selection is based purely on this academic performance metric rather than any separate written test or interview round.

Weighing This Internship Against Other Opportunities

Since the internship carries no accommodation, food or transport support, and pays a flat Rs. 9,000/- monthly stipend without leading to regular employment, candidates should realistically evaluate whether relocating to Singrauli for 9 months makes sense given their personal circumstances and financial situation. For candidates based in or near Madhya Pradesh, or those primarily seeking structured exposure to a major coal-sector PSU’s technical and administrative operations as a stepping stone for future applications, this PMIS engagement can still be a genuinely valuable early-career opportunity despite these limitations.

About Northern Coalfields Limited

Northern Coalfields Limited, headquartered at Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh, is one of the largest coal-producing subsidiaries of Coal India Limited, operating a network of opencast mines across the mineral-rich Singrauli coalfield region. Recognized as a “Great Place to Work” and holding ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 27001 and ISO 45001 certifications, NCL’s scale of operations, having produced 140.50 MT of coal in FY 2025-26 alone, means interns engaged here get exposure to genuinely large-scale industrial and administrative processes rather than a small operational unit.

Given the Very Short Deadline, Act Now

With the application deadline falling on 06 September 2026 and this notification dated only 01 September 2026, eligible candidates effectively have less than a week to complete registration, gather Aadhaar-bank linkage confirmation, and submit their online application through the PMIS portal. Given how compressed this timeline is compared to most government recruitment notices, candidates should not delay even by a day, and should treat same-day or next-day registration as the safest course of action once eligibility is confirmed.

A Note on Discipline-wise Merit Competition

Since merit lists are prepared separately for each of the six disciplines based on aggregate qualifying-examination percentage, a candidate’s competitiveness depends entirely on how their own academic percentage compares with other applicants within their specific trade, not across trades. A Lab Technician applicant with a strong B.Sc. Chemistry percentage, for instance, competes only against other Lab Technician applicants, meaning candidates should apply under the trade matching their actual qualification rather than attempting to stretch eligibility into a discipline where their qualification is a comparatively weaker fit for genuine selection chances.

A Final Word

Candidates who tick every eligibility box should not delay applying given the tight window before 06 September 2026 closes this opportunity.
