Income Tax Department Canteen Attendant Recruitment 2026: Selection Process
Selection runs through three distinct stages, all conducted at Bhopal only — candidates should note there is no alternate exam centre anywhere else in India for this recruitment.
Stage 1: Scrutiny & Shortlisting for Written Examination
280 candidates (40 eligible applicants per vacancy) will be shortlisted from all eligible applications, based on the percentage of total marks obtained in Matriculation (10th Standard) or equivalent. In case of a tie at the shortlisting cut-off, the older candidate (by date of birth) is ranked higher; if candidates are tied on both marks and date of birth, all such tied candidates are allowed into the written exam regardless of the 280-candidate cap.
Stage 2: Objective Type Written Examination
The exam lasts 30 minutes (40 minutes for eligible scribe-assisted candidates), with 1 mark for each correct answer and a 0.25-mark deduction for each wrong answer. Questions are set at Matriculation level, in both Hindi and English — the English version prevails in case of any discrepancy. There is no provision for re-evaluation or rechecking of scores, and no request for a change of exam venue will be entertained. No Travelling Allowance is paid to shortlisted candidates for attending the written exam. If candidates tie on marks, the older candidate is ranked first; a further tie is broken by marks in Food and Nutrition, then by marks in Hygiene and Cleanliness.
Stage 3: Skill Test
70 candidates (10 eligible candidates per vacancy) are shortlisted from the written exam for the Skill Test, also conducted at Bhopal only. The Skill Test carries 60 marks and evaluates the candidate’s practical proficiency in duties relevant to the post — preparation of beverages, basic food handling skills, preparation techniques, presentation, hygiene, and cleanliness.
Final Result & Document Verification
The final merit list (out of 100 marks — combining the written exam and skill test scores) is prepared strictly on merit, category-wise, and 7 candidates will be selected against the available vacancies. Results are displayed on the Income Tax Department’s notice board in Bhopal and on the regional website. Document Verification follows, where candidates must produce original certificates matching what was submitted in the online application — failure to do so cancels the candidature. A waiting list is maintained, and the next eligible candidate in merit order is considered if any selected candidate fails to join, declines the offer, or is found ineligible at any stage.
Provision of Scribe & Compensatory Time
- A scribe facility is provided to PwD candidates as per Government of India norms — mandatory availability for candidates with blindness or locomotor disability affecting both arms (BA), with a 10-minute compensatory time added to the written exam for those using a scribe.
- Scribe facility is also available to PwD candidates with less than 40% disability who have difficulty writing, on production of a certificate from a Chief Medical Officer/Civil Surgeon/Medical Superintendent of a Government healthcare institution.
- The scribe facility is provided ONLY if the candidate opts for it and indicates so in the online application form — requests made later, at the examination stage, will not be entertained.
- If a candidate brings their own scribe, that scribe’s qualification must be one step below the candidate’s own qualification.
- Eligible candidates who don’t use a scribe but qualify for one are still given the 10-minute compensatory time, on production of the required certificate at the time of examination.
Documents Required
- Matriculation (10th Standard) or equivalent certificate
- Community/Caste Certificate, if applicable — EWS, OBC, SC, ST (EWS certificate must be issued by an officer not below the rank of Tahsildar)
- Document supporting age relaxation claimed as Ex-Servicemen/Central Government Employee, if applicable
- Certificate in support of PwBD status, if applicable
- A recent passport-size photograph (taken not before 3 months from the date of notification, plain background, no cap/mask/glasses/earphones)
- Scanned signature (thumb impression allowed for PwBD candidates with blindness/low vision) in JPEG/JPG format
- Aadhaar card, or Aadhaar Authentication Form in its absence
Applications with missing, blurred, or inappropriate photographs or signatures will be summarily rejected. Candidates seeking reserved-category consideration or age relaxation must be ready to produce original certificates in the prescribed format at document verification or any stage the Department requests — otherwise their claim will not be entertained and their candidature may be cancelled.

Why the Selection Funnel Narrows So Sharply
It’s worth understanding just how competitive this process gets at each stage, since the numbers narrow dramatically from application to final selection. Out of however many total applications come in, only 280 candidates (40 per vacancy) advance to the written exam based purely on Matriculation percentage — meaning your 10th-standard marks alone determine whether you even get to sit the exam, regardless of any other qualification or experience you might have. From there, only 70 candidates (10 per vacancy) make it to the Skill Test. And the final selection of just 7 candidates comes from combining written exam and skill test scores out of a possible 100. In practical terms, this means a strong Matriculation percentage is not a minor detail here — it’s the single gatekeeping factor that decides whether you get any further chance at all, since the department isn’t evaluating full applications at the first stage, only that one number.
The Skill Test structure is also worth preparing for specifically, since it isn’t a generic interview — it’s a hands-on evaluation of exactly the duties listed in the post’s job description: preparing beverages, basic food handling, and demonstrating hygiene and cleanliness practices. Candidates with any prior experience in canteen, catering, hospitality, or food-service settings — even informal experience — would do well to be ready to demonstrate that experience directly during the skill test rather than just describing it.
