Who Can Apply

  • Essential Qualification: M.Tech/PhD in Mechanical/Materials/Aerospace Engineering from a recognized university. Candidates who’ve submitted their thesis and are awaiting viva-voce can also apply.
  • Demonstrated research experience in materials characterisation, metal additive manufacturing, laser cladding, hybrid surface deposition, or thermal/fluid characterisation of advanced engineering components.
  • Desirable: Hands-on exposure to Directed Energy Deposition (DED) or laser cladding; expertise in SEM, EDS, EBSD, XRD, or electro-chemical/structural analysis; proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, ANSYS, COMSOL, or CFD tools; and peer-reviewed publications in relevant areas (3D printing/cladding on superalloys, interfacial integrity, advanced material synthesis, etc.).
  • Age Limit: 35 years (relaxable per Government of India/DRDO norms for SC/ST/OBC/Women/PwD candidates).

What the Role Involves

  • Developing toolpaths and optimizing process parameters for 3D-printing metal tracks onto pre-existing aero-engine component substrates.
  • Conducting microstructural audits (grain growth, porosity, elemental mapping) across base-to-cladding deposit boundaries.
  • Building multi-physics, CFD, or thermal models to predict and mitigate high-temperature structural degradation and residual stresses.
  • Benchmarking and systematic validation of performance under thermomechanical conditions.
  • Authoring progress briefs, managing DRDO deliverables, and preparing technical publications.

How to Apply

  1. Fill the application form and upload scanned copies of your certificates and documents through the online portal, apply.iitjammu.ac.in, before 4 October 2026.
  2. Ensure you provide a valid, active email ID and mobile number – shortlisted candidates will be informed only through email.
  3. The interview will be conducted online or offline for shortlisted candidates, who must bring an updated CV and original/attested mark sheets and certificates.

Just meeting the essential qualification doesn’t guarantee an interview call – candidates are shortlisted based on merit and the project’s specific requirements. If selected, currently employed candidates must produce a relieving certificate from their employer.

Why This Opportunity Matters

This DRDO-sponsored project sits at the cutting edge of defence manufacturing technology – remanufacturing aero-engine parts through additive manufacturing could significantly cut costs and turnaround times for the Indian Air Force’s engine maintenance. For researchers in metal 3D printing, materials characterisation, or advanced manufacturing, this is a chance to work directly on a high-impact defence application at a leading IIT.
