Why the Two Projects Offer Very Different Career Experiences

Since one project studies entrepreneurial resilience through product and capital market lenses while the other examines the socioeconomic and algorithmic dimensions of platform/gig work in Punjab, candidates should choose their preferred project based on genuine research interest, given the significant difference in both remuneration (Rs. 25,000 vs. Rs. 18,000) and tenure (4-5 months vs. 10 months), rather than defaulting to whichever pays more per month.

Understanding the Preference for NVIVO and Qualitative Analysis Skills

Since the Entrepreneurs’ Survival project explicitly lists proficiency in Qualitative Data Management and Analysis software such as NVIVO as a desirable skill, candidates with prior coursework or project experience using such tools should highlight this specifically in their application, as it signals readiness for the qualitative interviewing and analysis components central to this role.

Why Fieldwork Willingness Is a Stated Requirement

Both projects involve substantial field-based data collection, from qualitative interviews for the Entrepreneurs’ Survival project to extensive travel across Punjab for the SARBAT-GIG project’s engagement with gig workers, meaning candidates should be genuinely prepared for field visits and travel as a core part of the role rather than an occasional add-on to desk-based research.

About IIM Amritsar

Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Amritsar is one of India’s newer IIMs, actively building its research portfolio across management, economics, and public policy domains. These Research Assistant positions support institute-sponsored research projects examining contemporary economic and labour market questions, offering early-career researchers hands-on exposure to applied social science research methodology.

What Research Assistant Experience at an IIM Adds to a CV

A Research Assistant stint at an IIM, even a short-term one, carries meaningful weight for candidates planning to pursue an MBA, a research-based Master’s, or a Ph.D. in management or economics, since it demonstrates hands-on exposure to academic research methodology, data handling, and institute-level project execution under faculty supervision, distinguishing a candidate’s profile from those with purely coursework-based academic records.

Understanding the SARBAT-GIG Project’s Policy Relevance

Since the SARBAT-GIG project is explicitly building outputs such as policy briefs, teaching cases, and a Punjab Gig Economy Dashboard, the Research Assistant on this project will contribute directly to research with potential influence on state-level labour policy discussions around platform and gig work, an area of growing academic and regulatory interest across India as the gig economy expands.

Final Word

Eligible Bachelor’s degree holders in Management, Economics, Statistics, or related disciplines should apply online through the IIM Amritsar Institute Recruitment Portal for either Research Assistant project by 23 September 2026, 05:30 PM.
