The High Court of Andhra Pradesh, Amaravati, has released a fresh notification for young law graduates. The court invites applications for 4 posts of Law Clerk, on contract basis, to assist the Hon’ble Judges of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh.
This is a prestigious, short-term legal role that puts fresh law graduates directly into a judge’s chamber, working on real case files. Since the eligibility window is narrow, both in terms of age and how recently you passed your law degree, read this article carefully before applying.
The application process here is entirely offline, so pay close attention to the postal address and the exact deadline explained below.
High Court of Andhra Pradesh Law Clerk Recruitment 2026 Highlights
These 4 posts are governed by the “Guidelines for Appointment of Law Clerks on Contract to Hon’ble Judges of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh,” originally issued via Gazette Notification No.88, dated 18.07.2020, and amended from time to time.
The number of vacancies may increase or decrease depending on the Court’s requirement, so treat 4 as an indicative, not a guaranteed, final figure.
Who Can Apply for High Court of Andhra Pradesh Law Clerk Recruitment 2026
Candidates must be citizens of India. They must not have attained 30 years of age as on 1st January or 1st July, whichever precedes the last date fixed for submission of applications.
Candidates should not be pursuing any other regular course of study, or any other profession or occupation, that would require them to be away from their place of work during their engagement as Law Clerk. Candidates enrolled as an Advocate must suspend their practice before joining, and keep that suspension active for the entire duration of their Law Clerkship.
Prominent Law Schools and Universities may also be invited to recommend their Alumni for these posts, alongside the regular open application route.
Educational Qualification for High Court of Andhra Pradesh Law Clerk Post
Candidates need a Degree in Law from a recognized University, either through a 5-year regular stream after completing 10+2 years of schooling, or through a regular curriculum degree course followed by a 3-year regular Law degree from a University or an affiliated college.
Candidates studying in the fifth year of the Five-Year Integrated Law Course, or the third year of the Three-Year Law Course after graduation, are also eligible to apply, provided they furnish proof of acquiring their Law qualification before actually taking up the assignment.
Importantly, candidates must have passed their Law Degree within 2 years immediately preceding the date of notification for selection of Law Clerks. This is a strict, recency-based rule, so candidates who graduated much earlier will not qualify, regardless of their other credentials.
Age Limit for High Court of Andhra Pradesh Law Clerk Recruitment 2026
A candidate must not have attained the age of 30 years as on 1st January or 1st July, preceding the last date fixed for submission of applications. This age cut-off is calculated with reference to the nearest preceding 1 January or 1 July date, not the actual application deadline itself.
The Hon’ble Chief Justice retains the power to relax or prescribe the criteria on age, eligibility, period of assignment, or selection process for Law Clerks, so any official relaxation would come directly from that authority.
Application Fee for High Court of Andhra Pradesh Law Clerk Recruitment 2026
The notification does not mention any application fee for this recruitment. Eligible candidates can apply by submitting their filled application form along with the required attested documents.
Honorarium for High Court of Andhra Pradesh Law Clerk Post
Each Law Clerk is paid a consolidated Honorarium of Rs.35,000 per month for the assignment. This amount was enhanced from the earlier Rs.25,000 to the current Rs.35,000, vide G.O.Rt.No.514, dated 16.06.2022.
Law Clerks are not entitled to any other allowances or perks beyond this consolidated monthly Honorarium. It is worth noting that a Law Clerk is not treated or deemed to be an employee of either the High Court Service or the Judicial/Judicial Ministerial Service.
Selection Process for High Court of Andhra Pradesh Law Clerk Recruitment 2026
Selection happens through a notification inviting applications from willing and eligible candidates, and eligible candidates must appear for a viva voce (interview) at Amaravati, at their own expense, on the date, time, and venue intimated to them later.
The High Court reserves the right to conduct this viva voce either physically, online, or through a combination of both, depending on prevailing conditions and necessity. The final selection is made by the Hon’ble Chief Justice, through a committee nominated for this purpose, purely on merit.
The list of candidates selected by the committee remains subject to the final approval of the Hon’ble Chief Justice, whose decision on all such matters is treated as final.
Duties and Responsibilities of a Law Clerk
A Law Clerk primarily assists the Hon’ble Judges on the judicial and academic side of their work. This includes reading case files, preparing case summaries and notes, and building a chronology of dates and events for each matter.
Law Clerks also identify facts, issues, and questions that may need to be addressed in a case, and carry out research work involving case laws and articles, useful for drafting judicial orders or preparing material for conferences, seminars, or meetings.
Since this role gives direct exposure to judicial reasoning and case analysis, it builds a strong analytical foundation, valuable for any future career in litigation, judicial services, or academia.
Terms of Engagement for Law Clerks
The engagement is normally for a period of 1 year from the date of assignment, though it can be extended, subject to the Chief Justice’s approval, for a further period not exceeding 4 years in total.
The assignment of any Law Clerk may be discontinued even before completing 1 year, without notice, if their services are found unsatisfactory. Law Clerks are entitled to Casual Leave at the rate of 1 day for every completed month of assignment, and any leave beyond 12 days in a calendar year leads to a pro-rata deduction from their monthly Honorarium.
Law Clerks are not permitted to take up any other employment or engagement, full-time or part-time, during their assignment. However, with the consent of the Chief Justice or the committee, they may appear for Junior Civil Judge examinations, and with permission, may also revoke their suspension of practice temporarily to appear for the All India Bar Examination (AIBE).

Why You Should Apply for High Court of Andhra Pradesh Law Clerk Recruitment 2026
Working as a Law Clerk to a High Court Judge is one of the most valuable early-career experiences a fresh law graduate can get. It offers direct exposure to judicial reasoning, case analysis, and the day-to-day working of a constitutional court.
This role also builds strong credentials for anyone aiming at a career in litigation, judicial services, or academia, since it demonstrates that you have worked closely with sitting judges on real matters.
Since the selection is merit-based and open to all eligible recent law graduates, this is a genuine opportunity, not limited to candidates from any particular law school or background.
Preparation Tips for High Court of Andhra Pradesh Law Clerk Viva Voce
Revise the core subjects of your law degree, especially Constitutional Law, Civil Procedure, Criminal Procedure, and Evidence Law, since these form the backbone of most High Court matters.
Be ready to discuss any moot court experience, internships with judges or law firms, research papers, or publications, since these often come up in a judicial viva voce.
Practice explaining legal concepts clearly and concisely, since a Law Clerk’s core job involves summarizing complex case files into clear notes for a judge, so communication skill matters as much as legal knowledge.
Prepare to travel to Amaravati at your own expense for the viva voce, and keep an eye on official communication, since the High Court may also choose to conduct the interview online depending on the situation.
