Vacancy Details
The Commission has indicated tentative vacancies of 1748 (One Thousand Seven Hundred Forty-Eight) posts across all participating organizations. Post-wise and category-wise tentative/final vacancies will be published separately on the Commission’s website (ssc.gov.in, under For Candidates > Tentative Vacancy). The Commission has clarified that it does not collect state-wise or zone-wise vacancy figures; candidates should approach the concerned User Department directly for such information.
Examination Pattern
The Computer Based Examination will be conducted in two papers.
| Paper | Subjects | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper-I | General Intelligence & Reasoning (50), General Awareness (50), and the relevant General Engineering subject (100) as per the post/stream opted | 200 (Qualifying in nature) | 2 hours (2 hours 40 minutes for scribe-eligible candidates) |
| Paper-II | General Engineering subject only, as per the post/stream opted | 300 | 2 hours (2 hours 40 minutes for scribe-eligible candidates) |
Both papers consist of Objective Type, Multiple-Choice Questions set in Hindi and English. Paper-I is qualifying in nature, and candidates are shortlisted for Paper-II based on merit in Paper-I. Separate merit lists are drawn for JE (Civil), JE (Electrical & Mechanical), Scientific Assistant (IMD) and JE (Telecom). There is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in Paper-I and 1 mark for each wrong answer in Paper-II. A Scientific Calculator and relevant reference tables (IS 456:2000 Code of Practice, Steam Table) will be made available on the candidate’s computer screen during the examination.

About This Recruitment
The SSC Junior Engineer Examination is one of the largest recurring recruitment drives for technical Group ‘B’ posts under the Government of India, covering engineering roles across organizations as varied as the Border Roads Organization, Central Water Commission, Central Public Works Department, Military Engineer Services, Department of Telecommunication and the India Meteorological Department. With 1748 tentative vacancies spread nationwide, this notice represents a significant opportunity for Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Telecom Engineering diploma and degree holders seeking stable central government employment in Level-6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission Pay Matrix.
Why the Subject/Stream Choice at Application Stage Matters So Much
Since the notice explicitly states that the subject or stream selected at the time of filling the Online Application Form cannot be changed under any circumstances, candidates should carefully verify which Part (A through G) corresponds to their actual educational qualification and intended post before final submission. A candidate eligible for JE (Telecom), for instance, may also be eligible to apply for Scientific Assistant (IMD) or JE (Electrical), but must correctly indicate the specific subject opted for, since the Computer Based Examination for Paper-I and Paper-II will be conducted strictly according to the subject/stream recorded in the application.
Understanding the Two-Paper Selection Structure
Candidates should note that Paper-I, though worth 200 marks, is only qualifying in nature – shortlisting for Paper-II is based purely on merit in Paper-I subject to the minimum qualifying marks, while final selection and merit ranking is determined by performance in Paper-II, which carries a heavier 300-mark weightage focused entirely on the candidate’s core Engineering subject. This structure means candidates should not treat Paper-I as a formality; failing to clear the qualifying threshold in Paper-I eliminates a candidate from appearing in Paper-II altogether, regardless of their expected proficiency in the core engineering subject.
Preparing for the Negative Marking Difference Between the Two Papers
Since the negative marking penalty is four times higher in Paper-II (1 mark deducted per wrong answer) compared to Paper-I (0.25 marks deducted per wrong answer), candidates should adjust their answering strategy accordingly – being more conservative about attempting uncertain questions in Paper-II than in Paper-I, since a wrong guess in Paper-II carries a proportionally steeper cost to the final merit score that determines selection.
