About This Recruitment
NEHU’s Department of Biomedical Engineering is recruiting a Project Research Scientist for a high-impact ICMR-sponsored collaborative research project addressing Robin Sequence, a rare congenital condition affecting infant airway and feeding function, in partnership with two of India’s leading medical institutions, AIIMS New Delhi and KGMU Lucknow. This 3-year position offers biomedical, mechanical or nanotechnology engineering postgraduates a rare opportunity to contribute directly to patient-specific medical device design using CAD/CAM and additive manufacturing techniques.
Understanding the Research Project
The project, titled “Transforming Non-Surgical Treatment of Robin Sequence Infants with a Patient-Specific Pre-Epiglottic Baton Plate,” focuses on developing a customized, non-surgical device to help infants born with Robin Sequence, a condition marked by a small lower jaw, tongue displacement and airway obstruction. The selected Project Research Scientist will work on designing and additively manufacturing (3D printing) patient-specific baton plates, applying rapid prototyping and CAD/CAM expertise directly to a real clinical problem in collaboration with medical teams at AIIMS and KGMU.
Why This Role Suits Biomedical Engineering Specialists
Candidates with a strong CAD/CAM and additive manufacturing background, particularly those with prior exposure to designing 3D printed dental or medical casts, are especially well-placed for this role, since the project’s core technical challenge lies precisely in this intersection of digital design and patient-specific medical device fabrication. The collaborative nature of the project, spanning NEHU, AIIMS New Delhi and KGMU Lucknow, also offers valuable multi-institutional research exposure that can strengthen a candidate’s profile for future doctoral study or research careers in biomedical device design.
About NEHU’s Biomedical Engineering Department
North-Eastern Hill University’s Department of Biomedical Engineering has been building a research profile at the intersection of engineering design and clinical medicine, with this ICMR-funded project reflecting the department’s growing capability in additive manufacturing and patient-specific device design. Working under Prof. Dinesh Bhatia as Co-Principal Investigator, the selected Project Research Scientist joins a small, focused research team where individual contribution to the project’s technical outcomes is likely to be substantial and directly visible, unlike larger research groups where junior researchers may be assigned narrower, more isolated tasks.
What Applicants Should Prepare Before Emailing Their Application
Since the application process is by email rather than an online portal, candidates should ensure their CV clearly highlights relevant CAD/CAM software proficiency, any additive manufacturing or 3D printing project experience, and details of their best 3 publications where applicable, formatted as a clean, well-organized document rather than a lengthy unstructured resume. Attaching scanned copies of the highest qualifying degree certificate and mark sheets alongside the CV, even though not explicitly listed as mandatory at the application stage, can help demonstrate preparedness and may be requested subsequently for the interview stage in any case.
Career Value of Working on an ICMR-Funded Device Design Project
For engineers considering a research career in medical device design, working on a live ICMR-funded translational project that involves designing an actual patient-specific device for infant patients offers substantially more hands-on, outcome-oriented experience than most standard academic research assistantships. The multi-institutional collaboration with AIIMS New Delhi and KGMU Lucknow also means the selected candidate will likely gain exposure to clinical requirements and constraints directly from medical practitioners, a perspective that purely engineering-focused research roles rarely provide, and one that can be genuinely valuable for a future career spanning biomedical device design, medical technology startups, or further doctoral research in this specialized field.
Understanding Robin Sequence and Why This Research Matters
Robin Sequence is a rare congenital condition in newborns characterized by an unusually small lower jaw (micrognathia), a tongue that falls backward and obstructs the airway (glossoptosis), and, in many cases, a cleft palate. Infants with this condition often face serious breathing and feeding difficulties in their earliest, most vulnerable weeks of life. Traditional management can involve invasive surgical intervention, so a non-surgical, patient-specific pre-epiglottic baton plate, custom-designed and 3D printed for each infant’s unique anatomy, represents a potentially gentler and more accessible treatment pathway, which is precisely the kind of innovation this NEHU-AIIMS-KGMU collaboration is working to develop and validate.
A Note on Applying Well Ahead of the Deadline
Since this is a single-position, email-based application process rather than a large-scale portal-driven recruitment drive, interested candidates should send their application well before 11 September 2026 rather than waiting until the final day, since email delivery or attachment-size issues can occasionally cause delays that a candidate has no way of confirming or correcting once the deadline has passed. A brief follow-up email confirming receipt, sent a few days after the initial application, is a reasonable and professional way to ensure the submission has been received by the Project Investigator’s office.
Where to Direct Queries
Candidates with specific questions about the project’s technical scope, required documentation, or the application process should reach out directly to Prof. Dinesh Bhatia at dbhatia@nehu.ac.in, or by phone at 0364-272-3853, rather than relying on secondary sources for clarification on this particular recruitment notice.
