Job Overview
Indian Overseas Bank wants 250 new Local Bank Officers, and this time there’s a catch worth knowing before you apply: wherever you get posted, you’re staying there for the first 12 years, or until you’re promoted to SMGS-IV, whichever comes first. IOB has split the vacancies across just four states — Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat — and you can only apply for one of them, so pick the state whose local language you actually speak, because there’s a proficiency test waiting for anyone who skipped it in school. This is a Scale-I (Assistant Manager) posting under Advt. No. HRDD/RECT/02/2026-27 dated 07.08.2026, and below we’ve broken down not just the totals but exactly how many seats fall in each reservation category, state by state, so you know your real odds before you commit to a state.
About Indian Overseas Bank
Indian Overseas Bank is a public sector bank headquartered in Chennai, with a network that spans India and reaches abroad as well. This particular drive is for the Local Bank Officer post in Junior Management Grade Scale-I — essentially an entry-level Assistant Manager role — and it’s a “local” recruitment in the truest sense: the Bank is hiring separately for each state, and your merit list, your interview, and your eventual posting all stay confined to the state you pick at the time of registration. There’s no switching later. Read that as both an opportunity (less competition per seat than an all-India draw) and a commitment (12 years is a long time to be tied to one state).

State-wise Vacancies
The bank hasn’t split these evenly — Tamil Nadu alone takes 100 of the 250 seats, so if you’re comfortable in Tamil, your odds look noticeably better than someone eyeing the 50-seat states. The Bank has also noted that some of these numbers include backlog vacancies carried forward from earlier recruitment cycles, and that the final reserved-category numbers could still move a little before the process concludes.
| State | Local Language Required | Vacancies |
|---|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu | Tamil | 100 |
| Karnataka | Kannada | 50 |
| Maharashtra | Marathi | 50 |
| Gujarat | Gujarati | 50 |
Category-wise Vacancy Breakdown (State by State)
This is the table most candidates skip past, and it shouldn’t be skipped — your real odds depend on your reservation category within your chosen state, not just the state’s total headcount. Here’s exactly how IOB has split each state’s seats across UR (General), EWS, OBC, SC and ST, per the official notification.
| State | UR | EWS | OBC | SC | ST | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu | 37 | 9 | 33 | 15 | 6 | 100 |
| Karnataka | 19 | 4 | 16 | 8 | 3 | 50 |
| Maharashtra | 19 | 5 | 15 | 7 | 4 | 50 |
| Gujarat | 19 | 4 | 16 | 6 | 5 | 50 |
| All-India Total | 94 | 22 | 80 | 36 | 18 | 250 |
A few things stand out once you look at it this way. Tamil Nadu’s OBC allocation (33 seats) is by itself larger than the entire Karnataka or Gujarat vacancy pool for that category — so an OBC candidate proficient in Tamil is looking at meaningfully better odds than an OBC candidate applying in the smaller states. ST candidates, on the other hand, have their best shot in Gujarat (5 of 50 seats, or 10% of that state’s total) compared to Tamil Nadu, where ST seats are 6 out of 100 — proportionally similar, but the absolute competition pool differs. EWS is evenly spread at 4-5 seats per state except Tamil Nadu’s 9, again tracking the larger overall vacancy count there.
PwBD (Persons with Benchmark Disabilities) Seats
Reservation for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities works on a horizontal basis — meaning these seats are carved out from within the UR/SC/ST/OBC/EWS numbers above, not added on top of them. If you qualify under PwBD, you’ll still be placed in your actual social category (SC, ST, OBC, EWS or UR), just counted against the PwBD sub-quota within it. Here’s the state-wise split across the four recognised disability categories — VI (Visually Impaired), HI (Hearing Impaired), OC (Orthopedically Challenged) and ID (Intellectual Disability).
| State | VI | HI | OC | ID | Total PwBD |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 4 |
| Karnataka | 0 | 0 | 2 | 1 | 3 |
| Maharashtra | 0 | 0 | 2 | 1 | 3 |
| Gujarat | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 2 |
| All-India Total | 2 | 2 | 5 | 3 | 12 |
Only a benchmark disability of 40% or more, certified by a competent authority, qualifies for this reservation — and per the latest Government of India directive (Office Memorandum dated 17.12.2025), a disability certified as “likely to improve” under the temporary category does not count. If your certificate says “progressive, non-progressive, or not likely to improve,” you’re covered.
Who Can Apply — Age & Qualification
Any graduate — no specific stream required — born between 2 August 1996 and 1 August 2006 qualifies on age, which works out to a straightforward 20-to-30 window as of the cut-off date of 1 August 2026. You’ll need to already hold your degree, or at minimum have your final mark-sheet in hand, by the time you register, and you’ll be asked to enter your graduation percentage on the form itself. There’s no minimum percentage specified, so a pass-class degree is enough as long as it’s from a UGC-recognised university or an equivalent institution.
If you qualify for relaxation under more than one category, the benefits stack — but only up to a hard ceiling of 50 years, and only for SC/ST/OBC candidates claiming cumulative relaxation. General and EWS candidates don’t get this stacking benefit; the 30-year cap applies to them as stated.
If you already work as an officer at another scheduled bank in a role that genuinely overlaps with a Scale-I generalist’s job — not just a similar-sounding title — IOB will credit you one advance increment per completed year of service, capped at two increments total. You’ll need your current or former employer to certify, in writing, that your job profile actually matches. If it’s a partial match or a different function altogether, no increment gets paid, and IOB has stated plainly that no correspondence on this point will be entertained after the fact. Officers at subsidiaries of scheduled commercial banks are capped at just one increment regardless of experience.
Application Fee
The fee is non-refundable the moment you pay it, and you can’t carry it over to a future IOB drive either — so double-check your state and category before you hit submit. Payment goes through online mode only: Debit Card, Credit Card, Internet Banking, BHIM or UPI. Keep the printout of your e-receipt; you’ll want it on hand if any payment dispute comes up later.
Selection Process
Three stages, in order: an Online Examination, a Local Language Proficiency Test (only for candidates who need it), and a Personal Interview. Just meeting the eligibility criteria on paper doesn’t automatically get you called for any of these — the Bank shortlists based on its own requirements at each stage.
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning & Computer Aptitude | 30 | 60 | 60 min |
| General/Economy/Banking Awareness | 40 | 40 | 30 min |
| Data Analysis & Interpretation | 30 | 60 | 60 min |
| English Language | 40 | 40 | 30 min |
| Total | 140 | 200 | 3 hrs |
There’s a quarter-mark penalty for every wrong answer, and unattempted questions cost nothing. There’s no section-wise cutoff, but you do need 35% overall if you’re general/EWS category, or 30% overall if you belong to a reserved category, just to stay in the race. Candidates who clear the exam and don’t already have proof of local-language study at the 10th or 12th level move to the Language Proficiency Test next — pass that, and you’re through to the interview.
The interview itself is worth 100 marks, with a minimum qualifying score of 50% for general candidates and 45% for reserved-category candidates. Final selection weighs the online exam and interview in an 80:20 ratio, and the combined aggregate cutoff mirrors the exam-stage numbers — 35% for unreserved, 30% for reserved. Merit lists are drawn up separately for each state and each category, so you’re only ever competing against candidates in your own state-category pool, not the full all-India applicant list.
Pay, Bond & Probation
Basic pay starts at ₹48,480 and climbs on the JMGS-I scale (48480-2000/7-62480-2340/2-67160-2680/7-85920), on top of which DA, HRA and CCA apply as per the Bank’s current rules. Two things worth flagging before you commit: first, you’ll serve a 2-year probation period before confirmation, governed by the Bank’s Officers’ Service Regulation; second, you’re signing a Financial Service Indemnity Bond for ₹2,00,000 committing you to a minimum of 3 years of service. Leave before that window closes and you become liable for the bond amount, so it’s worth weighing against any other offers you might be considering.
Documents to Keep Ready
IOB is specific about what it wants at the interview stage, and turning up without any of these can cost you the opportunity entirely — the notification is explicit that missing documents means you won’t be permitted to sit for the interview at all. Keep both originals and self-attested photocopies of the following ready well before you’re called:

Questions Candidates Are Asking
Can I apply for more than one state to improve my chances?
No. You pick one state, and that’s the only vacancy pool your application counts toward. Applying with a different state on a second attempt isn’t an option here — and if you submit multiple applications for the same state by mistake, only your last submitted one is considered.
Which state and category has the best odds for me?
Look at the category-wise table above rather than just the state total. Tamil Nadu has the largest pool in absolute numbers across every category, but that also means more applicants competing for those seats — Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat have smaller pools but proportionally similar reservation shares, so it often comes down to which state’s language you’re actually fluent in rather than which has the biggest headline number.
I’m already a bank officer elsewhere — do I get any pay advantage?
Possibly. If your current job profile genuinely matches a Scale-I generalist officer’s role at IOB, you get one advance increment per completed year of service, up to two. It has to be a real match though, not just a similar job title — you’ll need your employer to certify it, and officers at bank subsidiaries are capped at one increment.
What happens if I studied a different language in school than the one my state needs?
You’ll be routed into a Local Language Proficiency Test before the interview. It’s mandatory, and there’s no way around it if your 10th or 12th marksheet doesn’t already show that language as a subject you studied and passed.
Is the ₹2 lakh bond refundable if I leave early?
It’s not a deposit you get back — it’s an indemnity bond. Leave before completing 3 years and you’re liable for that amount, so it’s worth factoring into your decision before you accept the offer.
How is the online exam actually weighted — do I need to clear each section?
No individual section cutoffs, just an overall aggregate: 35% for general candidates, 30% for reserved categories. So a weak section can be offset by a strong one elsewhere, as long as your total clears the bar.
Are PwBD seats separate from the SC/ST/OBC/EWS/UR numbers?
No — PwBD reservation is horizontal, meaning it sits inside your actual social category rather than being an additional seat on top. A PwBD candidate who is also SC, for instance, is counted within that state’s SC allocation, not as an extra seat beyond it.
Do I need to travel to a specific city for the exam?
IOB has listed tentative examination centres across most states — for Tamil Nadu candidates, centres include Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli and several others; similar spreads exist for Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat. The Bank reserves the right to allot you to a centre other than your first choice if needed.
