About the 89-Day Senior Residency Programme

The Senior Residency Programme at RIO, IGIMS Patna is a short, ad-hoc engagement of 89 days designed to fill immediate clinical and teaching gaps in the Ophthalmology department while a regular selection process is undertaken. For MS/MD Ophthalmology postgraduates, this offers an immediate opportunity to gain hands-on Senior Resident experience at a premier autonomous medical institute in Bihar, along with exposure to a high patient volume typical of a regional ophthalmology referral centre.

Why the Extremely Short Timeline Matters

With the reporting time set for the morning of 12 September 2026 and the interview the same day, candidates have an extremely narrow window to arrange their Demand Draft, compile original certificates, and prepare a presentation of their thesis/publication. Eligible candidates based outside Patna should plan their travel well in advance, since late arrival after the 9:45 AM reporting cut-off could mean missing the interview altogether.

Since selected candidates must sign a legal bond committing to repay a pro-rata share of their emoluments if they discontinue the Senior Residency before completion, applicants should carefully consider their ability to commit to the full 89-day term before appearing for the interview. This clause is standard for ad-hoc medical postings and is intended to prevent sudden staffing gaps in patient care once a candidate has been selected and has joined.

What the Marking Scheme Reveals About Selection Priorities

With Subject Knowledge alone carrying 20 of the 100 total marks and Publication carrying up to 10 marks split between PubMed-indexed and non-indexed work, the marking scheme rewards candidates who combine strong clinical/theoretical knowledge with a demonstrated research and academic track record, rather than qualification alone. Candidates who have published in peer-reviewed journals, presented posters at conferences, or completed specialized training beyond their MD/MS should ensure they bring documentary evidence of each of these achievements to maximize their score, since these components collectively can account for nearly half the total marks.

Why This Recruitment Appeals to Recently Qualified Ophthalmologists

For MD/MS Ophthalmology graduates who have recently completed their postgraduate training, a Senior Residency at RIO, IGIMS Patna offers a structured, short-term opportunity to build clinical experience at a recognized autonomous institute before pursuing longer-term academic or private practice positions. Since the post is explicitly ad-hoc and limited to 89 days, it suits candidates looking for an immediate, credential-building assignment rather than those seeking long-term job security, and the extremely tight interview timeline suggests the institute is looking to fill these positions without delay.

Final Word

Eligible MD/MS Ophthalmology candidates interested in the Senior Resident post at RIO, IGIMS Patna should download and complete the application form from www.igims.org, arrange the requisite Demand Draft, and report to the Office Chamber of Chief RIO, New RIO Building, IGIMS, Patna-14 by 9:45 AM on 12 September 2026. Given the short notice, candidates are advised to double-check their certificates and Demand Draft a day in advance to avoid any last-minute complications on the morning of the interview.
