About the Phosphogypsum Valorisation Project

Phosphogypsum is a byproduct of phosphoric acid production, often considered an industrial waste material, but this ICAR-CRRI project explores its potential as a soil amendment to enhance fertility and productivity in rice-based cropping systems. This research direction has significant implications both for reducing industrial waste disposal burden and for developing cost-effective soil fertility solutions for rice farmers, particularly in regions where soil sulphur and calcium deficiency limit crop yields.

Why This Opportunity Is Valuable

Working on this project offers Young Professionals and Field Operators direct exposure to applied agronomic research, field trial implementation, and data collection methodologies at one of India’s premier rice research institutes. For B.Sc. Agriculture graduates and candidates with practical field experience, this position provides valuable hands-on research training relevant to soil science, agronomy, and sustainable farming practice careers.

About ICAR-Central Rice Research Institute

ICAR-Central Rice Research Institute (CRRI), Cuttack, Odisha, is India’s premier institute dedicated to rice research, covering varietal development, agronomic practices, soil management, and allied disciplines. CRRI regularly recruits Young Professionals and Field-level staff for its numerous externally-aided and ICAR-funded research projects, offering short-to-medium-term positions across various agricultural science disciplines.

Turning Industrial Byproduct into Agricultural Value

India generates substantial quantities of phosphogypsum annually as a byproduct of fertilizer manufacturing, and much of it currently ends up in disposal stockpiles due to trace radioactivity and heavy metal concerns. Research validating its safe, beneficial use as a multinutrient soil amendment — particularly for supplying sulphur and calcium in rice-growing regions — could open a significant new pathway for industrial waste valorisation while simultaneously addressing micronutrient deficiencies that limit paddy yields in many parts of eastern India.

What Selected Candidates Will Gain

Beyond the monthly remuneration, both the Young Professional-I and Field Operator roles offer meaningful exposure to structured agronomic field trials, soil sampling protocols, and data recording practices used in ICAR-funded research. This experience is directly relevant for candidates considering further studies in Soil Science, Agronomy, or Environmental Science, and also builds a strong practical foundation for those aiming to enter state agriculture department roles or agri-input industry positions in the future.

Final Word

This ICAR-CRRI EAP-486 recruitment offers two project positions — Young Professional-I and Field Operator — for candidates interested in applied soil fertility and rice cropping systems research. Eligible candidates should prepare their documents and Biodata form and report for the walk-in interview at ICAR-CRRI, Cuttack, on the respective dates: 15 September (YP-I) and 16 September 2026 (Field Operator).
