About the Law Researcher/Research Associate Role

Law Researchers/Research Associates in High Courts assist Hon’ble Judges with legal research, case analysis, and preparation of notes relevant to pending cases, playing an important role in supporting the judicial process. This engagement offers young law graduates direct exposure to High Court functioning and judicial reasoning, making it a valuable early-career opportunity for those interested in litigation, judicial services, or academic legal careers.

Why the First-Attempt, 60% Aggregate Requirement Matters

The notification’s requirement that candidates must have passed all examinations in their first attempt with at least 60% aggregate marks is a stringent academic filter, meaning candidates who required a repeat attempt at any stage of their education, even if their overall percentage exceeds 60%, would not meet this eligibility criterion. Prospective applicants should carefully verify this aspect of their own academic record before applying, since it is one of the more restrictive conditions in this notification.

Understanding the Post-Engagement Restrictions

The one-year bar on appearing before the specific Judge a Law Researcher was attached to, and the permanent restriction on appearing in any case they worked on, reflects standard judicial ethics safeguards designed to prevent conflicts of interest arising from a researcher’s prior access to a Judge’s deliberations. Candidates considering this role, particularly those planning to practice law in Jharkhand after their tenure, should factor in these restrictions when planning their post-engagement career.

Why This Recruitment Draws Strong Interest Among Fresh Law Graduates

With 25 posts available and a consolidated monthly honorarium of Rs. 40,000, this recruitment represents one of the larger and better-compensated entry points into judicial exposure for fresh law graduates in Jharkhand, especially compared to typical junior associate salaries at law firms or entry-level litigation practice. Given the requirement of a first-attempt academic record with at least 60% aggregate marks, competition is likely to be significant among academically strong candidates from law schools across Jharkhand and neighbouring states who are attracted by both the honorarium and the prestige of working directly with High Court Judges.

How the Recommendation Requirement Shapes the Applicant Pool

Since candidates who are practicing lawyers must secure a recommendation from a designated Senior Advocate, while non-practicing candidates need endorsement from the Head of their last Law School, College, or University, applicants should approach the relevant recommending authority well in advance of the application deadline. This requirement effectively filters for candidates who have maintained good standing and visibility with their academic institutions or professional mentors, adding a qualitative dimension to the selection process beyond marks alone.

Final Word

Eligible Law Graduates/Postgraduates or final-year law students interested in the Law Researcher/Research Associate post at the High Court of Jharkhand should submit their single-PDF application to rgjhc.jhr@gmail.com between 07 September 2026 and 28 September 2026.

A Note on Final-Year Students Applying

Since students in their final year of a 3-year or 5-year LL.B. course are explicitly eligible to apply, but their final selection remains conditional on passing their final-year LL.B. examination before actual engagement, such candidates should apply within the window while being prepared to furnish proof of passing their final examination if shortlisted, before joining is confirmed.

Preparing a Complete Single-PDF Application

Since the entire application, form plus enclosures, must be combined into one PDF file not exceeding 10 MB, candidates should scan their documents at a reasonable resolution that keeps file size manageable while remaining legible, and test that all pages open correctly before emailing. Given that incomplete applications or those not conforming to the prescribed requirements will be rejected without further communication, candidates should double-check that every required enclosure, marksheets, degree certificate, and recommendation letter, is included before sending the final email to rgjhc.jhr@gmail.com.

Staying Updated After Submission

Since the High Court will announce the shortlist, interview schedule, and venue only on its official website, and call letters will be sent to shortlisted candidates individually via email, applicants should check both their registered email inbox (including spam folders) and the official website regularly after the 28 September 2026 closing date, rather than waiting for a phone call or postal notification.
