What is Bihar STET?

The Secondary Teacher Eligibility Test (STET) is an examination conducted by the Bihar Vidyalaya Shiksha Samiti to determine the eligibility of candidates for appointment as teachers in Secondary and Higher Secondary schools across the state. It is a two-paper examination: Paper-I is meant for candidates seeking eligibility to teach at the Secondary level (Class 9-10), while Paper-II is meant for candidates seeking eligibility to teach at the Higher Secondary level (Class 11-12). Candidates may apply for either Paper-I only, Paper-II only, or both papers together, depending on the teaching level and subject they wish to become eligible for.

Subject Combination Eligibility Rules (Clarification)

The Bihar Vidyalaya Pariksha Samiti has issued a clarification circular specifying the exact graduate-level subject combinations required for candidates seeking eligibility in Mathematics, Science and Social Science under STET. Candidates should carefully match their own graduate mark sheet against these rules before selecting a subject in their application.

  • Mathematics: Candidates with a graduate degree in Physics/Electronics/Computer Science along with Mathematics, or a graduate in Engineering with Mathematics specialization, are eligible.
  • Science: Candidates must have studied Zoology, Botany or Chemistry at the graduate level, or hold an Engineering degree with a Science specialization; Biotechnology/Microbiology are also included under this subject.
  • Social Science: Candidates must have studied any two of History, Geography, Economics and Political Science as subsidiary/honours subjects at graduate level, with History or Geography being compulsory among the two.
  • Language Subjects: Candidates must have studied the relevant language as an Honours/Subsidiary subject at graduate level for Secondary school teacher posts.

The circular also clarifies that Multi Media & Web Technology is not taught as a subject in Bihar’s schools, so this subject’s Paper-II examination is not conducted. Since eligibility for subjects like Mathematics, Science and Social Science depends on very specific combinations of subjects studied at the graduate level, choosing an incorrect subject that does not match a candidate’s actual academic background can lead to rejection of candidature at a later verification stage, even after successfully appearing for and passing the examination.

Examination Pattern

The Bihar STET examination is conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode, consisting of 150 objective-type multiple-choice questions carrying 150 marks, to be completed within a duration of 2 hours 30 minutes (150 minutes). Since the examination is conducted across multiple shifts and dates for the large number of applicants, the raw scores obtained by candidates are normalized to ensure fairness across shifts before the final result is prepared.

Certificate Validity – Lifetime

A key feature of the STET qualification is that once a candidate clears the examination and obtains the STET certificate for a subject/paper, that certificate remains valid for lifetime for the purpose of teacher recruitment in Bihar. This means qualified candidates do not need to reappear for STET in every subsequent recruitment cycle for the same subject and paper level, and can use their existing valid STET certificate/score to apply whenever fresh teacher recruitment vacancies for Secondary or Higher Secondary schools are advertised by the Bihar Government.

How to Apply

  1. Candidates must apply online only through the official Bihar STET registration portal, stetregistration.cbrt.co.in.
  2. Register with basic personal details, choose the paper(s) and subject(s) for which eligibility is sought, and fill in educational qualification details as per the notification’s eligibility criteria.
  3. Upload the required documents, including photograph, signature, and category/reservation certificates (if claiming reservation benefit).
  4. Pay the applicable examination fee online as per the category-wise fee structure.
  5. The online registration and application window is open from 01 August 2026 to 20 August 2026 (5:00 PM), as per the notification.

About Bihar Vidyalaya Shiksha Samiti and STET’s Role

The Bihar Vidyalaya Shiksha Samiti conducts STET as the mandatory gateway qualification for lakhs of aspiring teachers across Bihar every recruitment cycle, given the state’s large network of government and government-aided Secondary and Higher Secondary schools. Since holding a valid STET certificate is a prerequisite for applying to teacher recruitment drives conducted by the Bihar School Examination Board and other recruiting bodies such as the Bihar Public Service Commission’s Teacher Eligibility Test-linked recruitment processes, clearing STET at the earliest opportunity gives candidates a head start whenever fresh teacher vacancies are notified, since the lifetime validity of the certificate removes the need to repeatedly re-qualify.

Preparation Tips for Candidates

Since STET is a subject-specific examination with 150 objective questions to be attempted in 150 minutes, candidates should focus their preparation on strengthening core subject knowledge in their chosen subject/paper, alongside general teaching aptitude and pedagogy concepts that are typically assessed in such eligibility examinations. Given that the qualifying percentage varies meaningfully by category – from 40% for SC/ST/Women/Divyang candidates up to 50% for the General category – candidates should be aware of their applicable qualifying threshold while planning their preparation and attempt strategy on exam day. Since scores are normalized across shifts, candidates need not worry excessively about the relative difficulty of their particular shift, as the normalization process is designed to make results comparable across all shifts and dates.

Documents Required for Application

Candidates should keep the following documents scanned and ready before starting the online application: a recent passport-size photograph and signature in the prescribed format and file size, Matriculation/10th certificate for date of birth proof, graduation and post-graduation mark sheets and certificates relevant to the subject applied for, category/caste certificate (for BC/EBC/SC/ST candidates claiming reservation benefit), and any teaching training qualification certificates (such as B.Ed. or equivalent) that may be required as per the eligibility criteria for the subject and paper chosen. Keeping these documents ready in advance helps candidates complete the online registration smoothly within the application window without last-minute delays.

Why STET Matters for Bihar’s Teaching Aspirants

For lakhs of B.Ed. and equivalent teacher-training qualified candidates across Bihar, clearing STET is often the single most important gateway step toward a government teaching career at the Secondary or Higher Secondary level. Since Bihar periodically announces large-scale teacher recruitment drives for its government and government-aided schools, and STET qualification is typically a mandatory prerequisite for such recruitment, candidates who clear STET early – and benefit from its lifetime validity – place themselves in a strong position to apply immediately whenever a fresh recruitment notification is announced, without needing to worry about re-qualifying for the eligibility test itself.
