About the Cy-CCUS Research Project

This DBT-sponsored project explores the use of indigenous cyanobacteria strains for carbon capture, utilization, and storage — a research area of growing importance given global efforts toward reducing industrial carbon emissions. Cyanobacteria, as photosynthetic microorganisms, have significant potential in biological carbon sequestration, and this project positions Bharathidasan University’s Department of Microbiology at the forefront of applied environmental biotechnology research in India.

Why This Opportunity Is Valuable for Life Science Graduates

Working under Dr. G. Muralitharan, who also directs the National Facility for Marine Cyanobacteria and coordinates the National Repository for Microalgae and Cyanobacteria-Marine, gives selected candidates access to specialized research infrastructure and mentorship in a niche but globally relevant field. For M.Sc and B.Tech/M.Tech graduates in Microbiology, Biotechnology, or Life Sciences, this project offers hands-on experience in cyanobacterial culturing, carbon capture methodologies, and applied environmental biotechnology — skills increasingly valued in both academia and the growing climate-tech sector.

About Bharathidasan University

Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, is a NAAC A+ accredited institution ranked 36th in the NIRF rankings, known for its strong research output in the sciences, including microbiology and biotechnology. Its Department of Microbiology hosts the National Facility for Marine Cyanobacteria and the National Repository for Microalgae and Cyanobacteria-Marine, making it a key national resource centre for cyanobacterial research in India.

Understanding Carbon Capture Research in Cyanobacteria

Cyanobacteria, often referred to as blue-green algae, are among the most efficient natural carbon fixers on the planet, converting atmospheric CO2 into biomass through photosynthesis. The Cy-CCUS project’s focus on “indigenous” strains suggests a specific effort to identify and characterize cyanobacterial species native to Indian coastal and inland waters that could be scaled up for industrial carbon capture applications — a research direction with strong future relevance as India works toward its net-zero emission commitments.

Career Growth Through This Project

Candidates joining at the Project Assistant or Project Associate level gain direct exposure to strain isolation, cultivation techniques, and carbon utilization assays under the guidance of a coordinator who also oversees a national-level microalgae repository. This kind of specialized, DBT-funded research experience is highly transferable to future opportunities in environmental biotechnology, algal biofuel research, and climate-focused biotech startups, in addition to strengthening candidature for subsequent PhD admissions in life sciences.

Final Word

This Bharathidasan University DBT project offers three positions for microbiology and life sciences graduates interested in cutting-edge carbon capture research using indigenous cyanobacteria. Interested candidates should email their consolidated CV/documents to gmuralitharan@zohomail.in and attend the walk-in interview on 21 September 2026 at the National Facility for Marine Cyanobacteria.
